'All Things Must Pass' Documents the Fall of Tower Records

Originally established in 1960 as a humble small-town drugstore, Tower Records grew to be a retail powerhouse, opening 200 stores across 30 countries on five continents, making it one of the biggest forces in the music industry: Tower would go on to rake in over $1 billion USD in 1999. The success wouldn’t last however and the retail giant would go on to file for bankruptcy just seven years later. What went wrong?
That’s the question director Colin Hanks explores in his upcoming documentary All Things Must Pass. Originally screened to glowing reviews at SXSW earlier this year, the film examines the explosive trajectory of the retail giant, its ultimate demise in the wake of the rise of digital downloads — and proliferation of online piracy — and the legacy forged by its rebellious founder, Russ Solomon. A star-studded affair featuring insights from stars like Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and Dave Grohl, All Things Must Pass will debut in theaters October 15.
